Apple has officially unveiled its latest premium iPhone lineup, and this year’s launch has turned out to be very different from previous iPhone generations. At its September 9, 2026 event, Apple introduced the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and the all-new iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone.
The launch has generated strong interest among Apple fans and smartphone enthusiasts, particularly because the company has entered the foldable-phone market for the first time.
The biggest surprise of the event was the iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable smartphone. The device features a 5.4-inch outer display and a much larger 7.6-inch inner display when unfolded.
Apple has positioned the Duo as a combination of an iPhone and a small tablet, with software designed around multitasking. It is powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip and supports Apple Pencil functionality. The starting price is $1,999, placing it firmly in the premium foldable category.
The foldable design has become the main talking point following the launch. Many technology observers see it as one of Apple’s biggest hardware changes in years.
Alongside the Duo, Apple launched the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Both models feature Apple’s new A20 Pro platform, improved cooling and a redesigned camera system. One of the biggest camera upgrades is the introduction of a 48MP main camera with variable aperture, giving users greater control over photography and allowing the camera to adapt to different lighting conditions.
Apple has also reduced the size of the Dynamic Island while improving its usefulness. The Pro Max receives particularly large battery improvements, with Apple describing it as the biggest battery-life increase ever delivered on an iPhone.
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the Pro Max starts at $1,299. Apple is also offering storage configurations reaching up to 2TB.
Early public reaction has been largely focused on the iPhone Duo rather than the traditional Pro upgrades.
The foldable design has attracted attention because Apple is entering a market where Samsung and other manufacturers have already released several generations of foldable phones. For many Apple users, the Duo represents a more significant change than the yearly camera or processor upgrades.
At the same time, the $1,999 starting price has become one of the biggest discussion points. While technology enthusiasts are excited by the new form factor, the price means the Duo is unlikely to be an affordable option for the average smartphone buyer.
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max have received a more familiar response. Early impressions highlight the camera improvements, A20 Pro performance and battery upgrades, although detailed long-term reviews are still developing because the phones have only just been announced.
Another surprising aspect of the launch is what Apple didn’t announce.
The standard iPhone 18 was not introduced at the September event. Apple instead focused on the premium iPhone 18 Pro models and the new iPhone Duo. Reports indicate that the standard iPhone 18 could arrive later, potentially in 2027.
This represents a significant change from Apple’s traditional yearly iPhone launch strategy.
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max look like powerful upgrades for users who want better cameras, stronger performance and improved battery life.
However, the iPhone Duo is clearly the star of Apple’s 2026 launch. Its foldable design, large internal display, A20 Pro chip and multitasking-focused software give Apple a completely new product category.
The biggest question will be whether Apple’s software experience and build quality can justify the Duo’s premium price. A full verdict will require hands-on testing, especially for durability, battery life, camera performance and the foldable display.
For now, Apple’s 2026 launch can be described as a major shift: rather than simply improving the traditional iPhone formula, Apple is attempting to redefine what an iPhone can look and feel like.
