Islamabad Protest Update: Roads Blocked as Security Tightens Ahead of September 27 March

Islamabad: Security measures have been intensified in Islamabad and surrounding areas ahead of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) march planned for September 27, 2026. The political situation has already affected traffic, public movement and daily activities in the twin cities.

The PTI has announced the march to demand the release of party founder Imran Khan, who remains incarcerated at Adiala Jail. Party leaders have continued to call on supporters to participate in the planned demonstration.

Major Roads Facing Restrictions

Several important highways and routes connecting Islamabad with neighbouring areas have been affected by closures or restrictions. According to a National Highways and Motorway Police advisory, sections of the M-1, E-35, M-14, M-2 and N-5/GT Road have faced restrictions because of the law-and-order situation.

The restrictions have affected movement between Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Taxila, Attock, Haripur and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Commuters have been advised to check official travel updates before starting their journeys.

Containers Deployed Across Key Routes

Authorities have placed containers at several important entry points and roads as part of preparations for the expected protest. The measures are intended to control the movement of protesters and maintain security around sensitive areas.

The situation has already caused disruption for transporters and commuters in the Islamabad-Rawalpindi region.

Section 144 in Islamabad

The Islamabad administration has imposed Section 144 for two months, prohibiting gatherings, rallies, processions and demonstrations in public places across the capital, including the Red Zone. The order was issued amid several planned protests and marches.

This means that authorities have placed significant legal restrictions on public gatherings ahead of the September 27 protest.

PTI Workers Detained

The security situation has also resulted in arrests and detentions of PTI workers. On September 25, Dawn reported that more than 150 PTI leaders and workers in Rawalpindi Division had been detained under the Maintenance of Public Order law and moved to different jails ahead of the planned march.

The report said police activity was continuing across Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum, Chakwal and Murree.

PTI leaders have criticised the arrests and security measures, while government officials have cited law-and-order and security concerns.

Rangers Deployment Requested

The Punjab government has also requested Rangers deployment in Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum and Mianwali from September 22 to October 5 to assist police in maintaining law and order during the period surrounding the planned protest.

What Commuters Should Know

For residents of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, the biggest immediate concern is transportation. Road closures and diversions can change quickly as authorities respond to developments.

People travelling between the twin cities and northern Punjab should check the latest traffic and motorway advisories before leaving, particularly if travelling through M-1, GT Road, Taxila, Attock or other major entry routes.

Final Thoughts

Islamabad remains under heightened security ahead of the PTI’s planned September 27 march. With Section 144 in force, containers deployed at important routes, security personnel mobilised and PTI workers detained, the coming days are expected to bring continued traffic and security restrictions.

The situation remains fluid, and road access may change depending on developments and official decisions.
