Google is celebrating its 28th birthday on September 27, 2026, marking nearly three decades since the company began its journey to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.
What started as a research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin eventually became one of the most influential technology companies in the world.
The story of Google began in the late 1990s when Larry Page and Sergey Brin were graduate students at Stanford University. They worked on a research project focused on improving how information could be found across the growing World Wide Web.
Their early work eventually developed into the search technology that became Google. The company officially came into existence in September 1998, with its early operations associated with a rented garage in California.
Google’s original mission was simple but ambitious: to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.
Google initially became famous for its fast and useful search engine. Over the years, however, the company expanded far beyond search.
Its ecosystem now includes services and products covering areas such as email, maps, video, cloud computing, smartphones, artificial intelligence and online productivity.
Google’s influence can also be seen through products such as Gmail, Google Maps, Google Drive, Android, YouTube and Google Search.
One of Google’s most recognizable traditions is the Google Doodle. These special versions of the Google logo celebrate holidays, anniversaries, cultural events and notable people.
The first Doodle appeared in 1998, when Page and Brin changed the Google homepage logo to indicate that they were away attending the Burning Man festival. What began as a simple message eventually developed into a global tradition.
Google has continued using Doodles to mark important occasions, including its own birthday.
Google’s Doodle website lists September 27, 2026 as “Google’s Birthday 2026.”
The birthday provides an opportunity to look back at how dramatically the internet and technology landscape has changed since 1998. Google has grown from a small search project into a company involved in many aspects of everyday digital life.
As Google enters its 29th year, artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly important part of its products and services. Search itself continues to evolve as Google works on new ways for people to discover and interact with information.
From a small research project to a global technology ecosystem, Google’s history reflects the rapid transformation of the internet over the past three decades.
Happy 28th Birthday, Google!
