Government Raises Petrol Price by Rs2.10 Per Litre, HSD Also Gets More Expensive

The federal government has increased the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD), adding to fuel costs for consumers across Pakistan. Petrol has been increased by Rs2.10 per litre, while the price of high-speed diesel has gone up by Re0.30 per litre.

Following the latest revision, petrol will now be available at Rs392.76 per litre, while high-speed diesel will cost Rs399.64 per litre. The new prices are applicable from October 3 to October 5, 2026, according to the Petroleum Division’s notification.

Fuel Prices Remain Under Pressure

The latest increase comes amid continued volatility in international oil markets and the ongoing Middle East conflict. Pakistan has faced significant fluctuations in petroleum prices throughout the year as global energy markets have responded to geopolitical tensions.

High-speed diesel, which had reached a peak of Rs520.35 per litre on April 3, has since fallen considerably. Petrol also previously touched Rs458.41 per litre on April 3 before declining from that level.

The government currently collects Rs114 per litre in taxes and duties on petrol and Rs100 per litre on diesel, according to the report.

Impact on Consumers and Transport

The petrol increase is likely to affect private vehicle owners, motorcyclists, rickshaw drivers and other small-vehicle users. Petrol is widely used by households and commuters, meaning even a relatively small increase can add to monthly transportation expenses.

The impact of diesel prices can extend further through the economy. HSD is heavily used by heavy transport, power plants and large generators. Any increase in diesel costs can therefore raise transportation and operating expenses, potentially putting additional pressure on the prices of goods and services.

Government Introduces Fuel-Saving Measures

As fuel prices remain elevated, the government has also revived austerity measures aimed at reducing fuel consumption. Under the latest measures, markets are required to close by 9pm, while fuel allocations for official vehicles have been reduced by 50 per cent for three months.

The government has also been implementing a relief scheme for motorcycles, rickshaws and vehicles with engines of up to 800cc. Officials said millions of registrations and token redemptions had already been recorded under the programme.

Daily Fuel Price Reviews

Pakistan has also moved toward more frequent fuel-price adjustments. Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik announced in July that fuel prices would be fixed on a daily basis, allowing the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) to adjust rates according to international market movements.

The latest increase highlights how global oil-market volatility continues to influence fuel prices in Pakistan. For consumers already facing higher living and transportation costs, even modest changes in petrol and diesel prices can have a noticeable impact on household budgets and businesses.
